Frostbite races are running again in the winter of 2023-24, and we are delighted to have Viking Marine on board as a sponsor again this year.

We try to hold racing on most Sundays from November through to March, weather permitting. You can find news and updates here, or on our Facebook page.

The races are intended for mono-hull dinghies, but we may allow other light craft that can race safely on the same course as the dinghies.

Frostbite Races

Racing is scheduled on Sundays, with the first start at 14:00. We normally have two races each day, if the weather allows, but we might have three races on a really nice day! Racing usually takes place inside Dun Laoghaire harbour, with permission from the Harbour Master. In good conditions, we might venture outside the harbour, but not too far away. The courses may be triangular, windward-leeward or a mix of the two.

Racing is divided into two series:

  • Series 1: 5 November to 17 December 2023
  • Series 2: 7 January to 24 March 2024

Entries for Series 2 are still open – see the entry form below.

Documents

The Notice of Race gives details of the series, entry fees and other information you might need to decide whether you want to enter the series.

The Sailing Instructions specify the rules for racing. This year, we have a new rule (SI 1.6) allowing ILCA and Aero boats use a smaller sail than normal, as announced in the Notice of Race. The “Blue Flag Rule” is gone, but SI 11.6 still requires boats that have finished racing to stay out of the finishing area while the finish line is active. Also note that the finish mark may be a small pin mark, not the striped inflatable cylinder used for the start line. If both marks are in the water, the pin mark is the finish mark – the striped mark is probably being set up as the start mark for the next race.

If you want to request a protest hearing, redress, etc., you can download a Hearing Request Form as a Microsoft Word document or as a pdf document.

Results

Results are available on Halsail shortly after we finish processing them.

HalSail shows the overall results first, and you can scroll down to see the results for individual races. The blue button with the down arrow, just below the DMYC burgee, will bring you directly to the latest race. What you see depends on the width of your screen – on a mobile device, you can use landscape orientation to see more details.
